This One Started With a Coffee
This conference didn’t start with a brief. It started with a coffee. A conversation. A shared ambition.
When Volvo Trucks South Africa began planning their Kick-Off Conference & Top Achiever Awards, what stood out immediately was the clarity of vision from Belinda and her team. They didn’t want another conference. They wanted something their people would feel.
Our role at STRONG Conferences was not to impose a concept, but to listen carefully and help bring that vision to life in a way that was immersive, strategic and executable.
Partnership Before Production
In our industry, conferences are built on trust long before they’re built on stages.
This was a collaborative journey from day one. Clear objectives. Honest conversations. Tough decisions. Intentional alignment.
A clear brief makes all the difference. It saves time, budget and unnecessary rework. But more importantly, it creates focus. When a client knows what they want to achieve and trusts you to help architect it, something powerful happens.
Turning Vision Into Experience
The core idea was performance — not theoretical performance, but real, embodied performance.
Guests arrived in athletic wear. Instead of name tags, they received race bibs. Instead of conference bags, they received race packs aligned to each session.
The Olympic-style opening ceremony included internal staff singing the national anthem and the MD lighting the Volvo Blue Flame that burned throughout the day.
The CrossFit Disruption
Inside a CrossFit box, delegates expected a workout. Instead, they were given no instructions. A timer appeared. Three minutes. Confusion. Then: Sit down.
The debrief unpacked clarity, communication and leadership behaviour under pressure.
Mika shaped this experience through powerful video storytelling and the strategic race packs that deepened each session.
Well-being and Energy
The event unfolded across the Wanderers precinct, creating a walkable, resort-style leadership experience.
Smoothie bikes, personalised coffee prints, orange slices and round-robin soccer reinforced the performance and teamwork theme.
Sustainability by Design
Each delegate received a glass refillable water bottle. Water stations eliminated single-use plastic. All furniture and décor were reusable from STRONG Event Décor inventory. Modular staging ensured longevity.
Nothing was built to be discarded.
The STRONG Team
Kelsey managed operations with precision and professionalism. Stephan Nel and the STRONG Event Décor team transformed the venue from fitness training ground to glamorous awards evening.
Ryan Hignett ran the show seamlessly. Together with Aimee Plank, Conan Ntuli and Adriaan van Vuuren, the design, presentation and video execution elevated the entire experience.
The Outcome
The energy shift was visible. Leaders were engaged. Teams connected. Strategy internalised. Most importantly, the client felt heard and their vision honoured.
Conferences are not built on décor and screens. They are built on relationships, trust and clarity of purpose.
